Q & A

Why was SUMMER SOLUTIONS® founded?
Nancy Soschin established SUMMER SOLUTIONS® in 1984 to help parents in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area find summer camps for her children. From this modest beginning, SUMMER SOLUTIONS® now serves families throughout the U.S. and overseas. Nancy has been a camper and counselor herself, in addition to being a mother.

What Types of Overnight Camps & Programs Are Available?
Traditional Sleep Away Camps: Range from 2 – 8 weeks; located throughout the USA; Coed or single-sex, multi-cultural or religious.

Specialty Camps: Theater, creative/applied arts, music, photography, dance, weight loss, computers, horseback riding, hockey, soccer, baseball, tennis – you name it! There’s pretty much a specialty camp for every specific interest.

Sports Camps: Tennis, basketball, baseball, football, soccer, scuba diving, sailing and windsurfing. Some involve tournaments in the USA and abroad.

Teen Programs: General or specialty, including drama, outdoor expeditions, environmental study, leadership training, and more

Academic & Language Enrichment: Your child can learn a new language and become immersed in a country’s culture, or make English a second language. Other programs strengthen existing skills or enable a teen to study non-academic subjects, including film, art, journalism, architecture, comedy, courtroom law, drivers education, college prep, SAT prep, pre-college credit courses and university tours. Study is available in the USA and at European schools. Most academic programs allow time for play, sports and socializing as well!

Adventure/Wilderness: Hiking, white water rafting and wilderness basics, throughout the USA, Canada and abroad.

Teen Travel: Cross-country and international touring while staying in hotels, college dorms and/or campsites.

Community Service: Teens choose from a variety of initiatives such as helping Alaskan residents run a camp for underprivileged children, learning about kayak building from Native American elders in Montana, helping communities in Tanzania, and much more! There are programs available worldwide.

Special Needs: Environments are designed with special care for those requiring specific attention to emotional, behavioral, learning and/or physical needs, as well as high-intellect development.

Family Camps: Spend a weekend or week at camp with your kids, as a family vacation, reliving your own childhood memories; or as a trial sleep away camp experience for your child. Even host a family reunion!

How Much Will an Overnight Program Cost?
Although camps and programs exist to fit all budgets, you can expect to pay an average of $800 – $1,500 per week for a private or specialty camp. The ranges below are general guidelines:

Traditional Overnight/Sleepaway Camp: Range from $1,700 (two weeks) to $10,000 (eight weeks). Public and non-profit camps are generally less.

Specialty Camps: $1,000 per week, based on location and activity.

Academic & Language Programs: $5,000 for three weeks.

Adventure/Wilderness: $1,000 per week, based on location and activity

Travel Programs: $5,000 for three weeks; price varies depending on trip length, hotel stays and destinations (USA vs. abroad).

Community Service Programs: $1,000 per week; price varies depending on trip length, destination and housing type.

Thing To Keep in Mind…
Many camps offer sibling and/or early enrollment tuition discounts. Some programs extend financial assistance to qualified families.

When formulating your budget for an overnight camp, trip or program, consider additional costs such as: camper transportation and baggage; camper supplies; uniforms; camper packages; overnight visiting expenses (if the camp is not within a reasonable driving distance); optional camp activities; extended trips and other specialized equipment.

How Does SUMMER SOLUTIONS® Work?
SUMMER SOLUTIONS® works with over 500 programs and keeps up-to-date on ALL of them on an ongoing basis. Our team makes on-site visits to camps and meets with program directors regularly. This ensures that we have current evaluations of the programs we represent. During our on-site tours we speak not only with the camp owner/director, but also with staff and campers. Each year, our camper families fill out evaluations of their summers, so that we can gain their input for future use and reference.

How Will I Benefit From Working With SUMMER SOLUTIONS?
Working with SUMMER SOLUTIONS® can help you in several ways. We will educate you about all of the different types of summer experiences available. We will assist you in focusing on your objectives, and your child’s, and matching them to appropriate programs. We simplify this task by educating you in the differences among programs – often differences not readily available by reading a web site or a brochure. We usually make 3 – 5 recommendations, all within your budget, location and session length requirements, and all geared to give your child the best possible summer experience.

How is your service free?
Summer Solutions is commissioned by the summer camps. If you enroll your child in a camp we have recommended the camp pays us a commission, much like a travel agency. This does not in any way increase your price for the camp. We are very selective of the camps we represent. There is no camp that can pay us enough money to recommend them if they are not up to our standards. You can trust us, we have our own children and know the importance of finding the right program for any budget, location and requirement.

When do I need to start thinking about booking a program for my child?
This depends on the camp. Traditional full-season camps start to enroll their campers during the summer so you would need to start looking for camps in the spring a year before you want to send your child to camp.

Two and four week session camps have rolling enrollments and you should start looking the summer before or in the fall in order to get the session you want.

Teen programs tend to enroll a little later, during the fall or winter.

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, and we will help you find the right camp for your child at anytime, including last minute.

Can I meet with you in person?
We often have home meetings where we can meet with groups of parents to provide them general information. If you would like to host a home session, just contact our office and we will set it up.

Why should I use your service instead of the Internet search engines?
Search engines are wonderful tools to show off camps. However, they are advertisements and naturally make every camp look wonderful. As we have visited the camps and are familiar with their facilities, staff, philosophies and camper population/demographics, we can help you eliminate camps that would not be appropriate for your needs.

Tell me about the process from when a parent calls you to when a program is selected.
The process begins with a phone conversation. We interview the parents about their hopes and desires for their child’s summer experience and the interests and personality of their child. We discuss location, type of camp, budget and session length. We will then send the parents a list of the camps recommended and will have the camps send the parent their brochures, DVDs and applications. Parents can consult with me at any time and as often as necessary until the appropriate camp is identified. There is no cost for our services.
